Social Media Networks

Forms of media have been around for thousands of years but recently there has been a surge in a type of media, called social media. Industrial media such as newspapers, television and radio are used to directly promote a product or service where as the new wave social media networks are used more as an interactive media guide and social interface with a business to its consumer. Scholars Andrea Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media networks as “a group of Internet based applications…that allow the creation and exchange of user generated content”. According to Wikipedia, the term “Social Media” was first used after LinkedIn created their social network application in 2004. The term has become broader, encompassing Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and many other social media websites.

As technology grows, so will the social media networks. Within the last couple of year’s companies big and small have started using social media networks. No longer are these websites solely used by people to connect with family and friends, now they are used to help companies build awareness about their brand. Social media networks allow companies like Coca-Cola and Applebee’s to measure the success of a product quickly and more directly with a large base of consumers. Companies are using this avenue for public relations issues and according to a poll by emarketer.com, 40.7% of all business to business companies use Twitter to regularly monitor marketing initiatives.
